It is Plural of: Aalim which means the erudite one a scholar (of Ilm-of-Outward) the all knowing etc. "The Aalim is he who reaches that a degree in Ilm that nothing besides Amal should last" P41 Emir ul Konain. Please also read P74-P135 of Emir ul Konain. Plural is Ulema means (religious) Scholars. The corruption of one Aalim becomes the cause of the corruption of the entire world (P76 Asraar ul Qadiri). Ulema are they who are the heirs (and inheritors) of the Messengers (of Allah) Alaihimus-Salaam and on their forehead are present the signs of the following the footsteps of Muhammad Sal Allahu Alaihe Wa Aa-lehee Wa-sallam and are the trustees of God (P105 Ain ul Faqar). That person who has got education from the Ulema and that person who has received the Ilm of the Teaching of Talqeen with Yaqeen from the Faqeers the Masters of Marifat - what is the difference between these two (persons)? [Thus you should know this that] Ulema are the Seekers of Ilm and Faqeers are the Seekers of the Almighty Lord (P95 Muhik ul Faqar Klaan).
